She worked as dramaturge, chief-dramaturg and artistic director at several German theatres including Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and Volksbühne Berlin, as well as at Züricher Schauspielhaus. At the Schauspielhaus Zürich she was the Co-Director with Christoph Marthaler, with whom she worked closely, artistically, for many years. In 2005 she started international curating and was the Artistic Theatre Director of the Wiener Festwochen for 7 years as well as the Artistic Director of the German Festival Ruhrtriennale. She has also taught at several at Theater and Literature departments, as well as writing and publishing reports and essays. Currently, she is Curator and Advisor for the international program of the Athens Epidaurus Festival in Athens (Greece).
